Ever since 4-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents were out to dinner, her disappearance has been called “the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history.”
Fifteen years later, her whereabouts remain unknown, and it is still unclear whether she is alive. However, her parents have never lost hope. On May 12, 2022, what would have been Madeleine’s 18th birthday, her devastated parents shared a heartfelt message: “We love you, and we’re waiting for you. We’re never going to give up.”
The investigation into her disappearance continues, and though Kate and Gerry McCann were once considered suspects, they have always maintained hope of finding their daughter.
In 2020, detectives working on the case stated their belief that Madeleine had been murdered. German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters suggested that the prime suspect, Christian Brueckner, did not take her to Germany as some theories suggest but instead killed her in Portugal. “I am optimistic we will solve this case,” Wolters told the Evening Standard.
Brueckner, a 44-year-old German pedophile, is currently serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is also awaiting trial for a separate case involving the rape of an Irish tour representative in 2004.
The case has gained renewed attention following the claims of a 21-year-old Polish woman, Julia Wendell, who has gone viral for insisting that she is Madeleine McCann. Julia has amassed over a million Instagram followers, where she shares ‘evidence’ supporting her claim.
Her Instagram account, titled “Help me, I need to talk with Kate and Gerry McCann” and using the handle “iammadeleinemccan,” features comparisons between herself and Madeleine, highlighting physical similarities such as the rare eye defect and certain facial features. She also claims to have little recollection of her childhood.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Julia shared: “I have lived a very hard life and suffered a lot of trauma. My abuser was a German pedophile who was a suspect in the Madeleine McCann investigation.
“I had not heard of this case until I started questioning my parents about my childhood, as I have little to no memory of it. The memories are blurry, and whenever I ask questions, my parents avoid answering or change the subject.”
Julia further added: “I don’t remember being taken away. In fact, I remember very little from my early years… I have asked my mother for pregnancy photos, medical records, or childhood pictures, but she never shows them. Instead, she calls me crazy.
“My school teacher once told me I wasn’t there from the start, yet my parents insist I was. After all this confusion, I started doing my own research and discovered Madeleine McCann’s story. The more I learned, the more I saw similarities between us. It has been so stressful trying to get people to listen to me.”
Reports suggest that Julia’s claims have reached Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, who are open to following up on the lead. They may also proceed with Julia’s request for a DNA test.
Julia confirmed this herself on Instagram, writing: “Thank you for the support! Kate and Gerry McCann agreed to a DNA test!”
However, Julia’s parents strongly disapprove of her actions, calling her “horrible” for giving the McCanns false hope.
The world continues to watch as this unexpected twist unfolds, and many still hope that one day, the truth about Madeleine McCann’s disappearance will finally come to light.
