Scientists Uncover DNA and Diet Secrets Behind 117-Year-Old Woman’s Longevity

Maria Branyas Morera, an American-Catalan, held the title of the world’s oldest person until her passing in August 2024 at the age of 117. She succeeded Lucile Randon, who lived to 118 before passing in 2023.

While reaching such an age may seem unimaginable to most, many are curious about Morera’s “secret” to longevity. Now, scientists believe they have uncovered key factors behind her remarkable lifespan by analyzing her DNA and diet.

Unlocking the Genetic Code of Longevity

Led by genetics professor Manel Esteller from the University of Barcelona, researchers studied Morera’s genetic makeup and microbiota. She often attributed her long life to “luck and good genetics,” and scientific findings suggest she may have been right.

Before her passing, researchers discovered that Morera’s genetic profile allowed her cells to function as if they were 17 years younger than her actual age. Even more striking, her gut microbiota closely resembled that of an infant.

Despite experiencing deafness and joint pain in her later years, Morera remained in relatively good health and maintained mental clarity until her final months.

Esteller explained: “In Maria Branyas, we found a combination of rare genetic variants in multiple pathways, immune system, heart protection, brain activity, and mitochondrial metabolism, that likely worked together to support her exceptional longevity.”

The Role of Diet in Longevity

Beyond genetics, experts also credit Morera’s dietary habits, particularly her adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Xavier Aldeguer, a digestive and microbiota specialist at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI), highlighted one unique aspect of her diet: consuming three yogurts daily. This may have helped maintain a balanced and healthy gut microbiome, a factor increasingly linked to longevity.

Aldeguer hopes to study the microbiota of other supercentenarians to determine if specific prebiotic patterns contribute to extended lifespans.

A Step Toward Prolonging Life

Esteller believes these findings could pave the way for developing medications that slow aging while minimizing age-related decline.

With Morera’s cells functioning much younger than expected, he concluded: “This study reinforces the idea that aging and disease can, under certain conditions, be separated, challenging the common belief that they are inevitably linked.”
