Immediate Actions to Take After a Snake Bite

Snake Bite First Aid: Critical Steps to Save a Life

A snake bite is a medical emergency. Acting quickly and correctly can mean the difference between life and death. Follow these steps to maximize survival chances:

1. Stay Calm & Stop Moving

  • Panic speeds up your heart rate, spreading venom faster.
  • Sit or lie down immediately to reduce circulation.
  • Keep the bitten limb still and at or slightly below heart level.

2. Call Emergency Services NOW

  • Dial local emergency numbers (911, 112, etc.) or get to a hospital immediately.
  • If possible, describe the snake (color, pattern, size) but do not waste time chasing or killing it.

3. Remove Tight Clothing or Jewelry

  • Swelling can occur rapidly—take off rings, bracelets, or tight sleeves near the bite.

4. Clean the Wound (If Safe)

  • Rinse gently with clean water to reduce infection risk.
  • Do NOT cut, suck, ice, or apply tourniquets—these worsen tissue damage.

5. Immobilize the Limb

  • Use a splint, bandage, or cloth to restrict movement (like a sprain wrap).
  • Avoid tight pressure—you should still fit a finger underneath.

6. Monitor for Severe Symptoms

  • Watch for trouble breathing, swelling, dizziness, or vomiting.
  • If breathing stops, begin CPR if trained.

What NOT to Do:

❌ Never suck out venom—it doesn’t work and risks poisoning the helper.
❌ Never apply ice, alcohol, or electric shocks.
❌ Never give the victim food, alcohol, or painkillers.

Time is Critical! Even “dry bites” (no venom injected) need professional care. Antivenom is the only proven treatment—get help fast.
