We often view celebrities as having perfect lives, forgetting that, at the end of the day, they’re just people who face their own struggles. Fame doesn’t shield them from hardships, and when they speak out about their personal challenges, they help break down stigmas and raise awareness about difficult issues.
Recently, actor Colin Farrell opened up about the emotional and “tricky” decision to place his 21-year-old son, James, in a care facility.
Farrell, who shares James with his ex-partner Kim Bordenave, has previously spoken about his son’s diagnosis of Angelman syndrome. This condition affects the nervous system, leading to developmental delays, but does not impact life expectancy. However, those with Angelman syndrome require lifelong support.
In an interview with Candis Magazine, the 48-year-old actor reflected on his decision to seek care for James, stating, “It’s tricky – some parents will say, ‘I want to take care of my child myself,’ and I respect that.” He explained his reasoning: “But my horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James’ mother, Kim, has a car crash and she’s taken too, and then James is on his own?”
He continued, emphasizing that without a proper plan in place, his son could become “a ward of the state.” Farrell’s priority is ensuring that James finds a place where he can live a fulfilling, happy life, surrounded by care and connection.
Despite the challenges, Farrell has always spoken lovingly about James. In 2008, he called his son “nothing but a gift” and has said that James is “exactly the way he should be.”

In honor of his son, Farrell launched the Colin Farrell Foundation last year to support children with intellectual disabilities. He shared with People magazine that, once a child with special needs reaches adulthood, the protections and support systems in place during childhood often disappear. Farrell’s goal is to make sure that young adults like James are treated with kindness, respect, and inclusion.
“I want the world to be kind to James,” Farrell stated. “I want the world to treat him with kindness and respect.”
