A woman who was filmed on a plane after refusing to swap seats with a crying toddler has spoken out to share her side of the story.
Discussions about plane etiquette are nothing new, with viral stories over the years featuring everything from passengers taking their shoes off mid-flight to heated arguments over assigned seating and unruly behavior.
Brazilian woman Jeniffer Castro recently found herself at the center of such a debate when a video of her surfaced online.
During a short 50-minute flight from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte last December, Castro boarded her GOL Airlines flight to find a young child sitting in the window seat she had pre-booked.
When she politely asked the child’s mother to move so she could sit in her assigned seat, the mother began filming her, saying: “I’m recording your face. This is disgusting. It’s the 21st century, and people have no empathy for children.”
After the clip went viral, Castro appeared on the Portuguese-language podcast Cola Mais to share her perspective, revealing that she is considering legal action against the mother for sharing her image online.
When asked if she was considering legal action, she reportedly responded, “Measures are now being taken.”
She added, “What I went through wasn’t easy. The flight attendants could have at least asked if I needed anything or if I was uncomfortable, but they didn’t. They chose to stay out of it.”
Castro didn’t specify whether the ‘measures’ she was considering were legal but shared more details about what happened during the short flight.
The 29-year-old explained that after boarding, she waited for the toddler to move before another passenger suggested she swap seats.
“A guy across the aisle said, ‘Change with him, you sit by the aisle, and he’ll take your seat,’” she recalled.
After securing her assigned seat, Castro claimed the mother was “very” rude to her while the child cried for the entire flight.
Castro expressed gratitude for the support she received online from those who backed her decision not to swap seats.
While the video sparked mixed reactions, many agreed it was unreasonable to demand a seat swap and then film someone for refusing.
“She is well within her right not to move! I’m sick of self-entitled parents,” one person commented on Facebook.
“Passenger didn’t ask to be filmed just because a parent felt entitled. Hope she wins,” another added.
