A 14-year-old boy tragically passed away after injecting himself with a butterfly as part of an online challenge.
Davi Nunes Moreira, from Planalto, Brazil, endured a painful seven-day battle in the hospital before his death. Initially, Davi told his father that he had sustained an injury while playing, but as his condition worsened, he eventually confessed to injecting himself.
Despite receiving specialized medical treatment, Davi’s health continued to deteriorate, and doctors were unable to save him. The official cause of death has not yet been determined, but the Civil Police of Bahia have launched an investigation. A spokesperson stated that the autopsy results would help clarify the cause and that the investigation aimed to uncover the truth.
Local media reported that Davi injected himself with a solution made from a crushed dead butterfly, part of a disturbing social media trend. Shortly after the injection, he began vomiting and limping. Once in the hospital, Davi admitted to mixing a dead butterfly with water and injecting the mixture into his leg. His father later found the syringe Davi had used under his pillow while cleaning the house.
Doctor Luiz Fernando D. Relvas speculated that the cause of death could be an embolism, infection, or allergic reaction, but the exact nature of the mixture Davi injected remains unclear. The doctor also noted that there might have been air bubbles in the syringe, potentially causing an embolism.
Investigators are considering the possibility that Davi went into septic shock after the toxins from the butterfly mixture triggered his body to shut down. Professor Marcelo Duarte, a butterfly expert at Sao Paulo University’s Zoology Museum, stated that the biology of butterflies and the toxicity of their bodily fluids to humans have not been thoroughly studied.
Although some Brazilian media outlets have speculated that Davi may have seen the challenge online, he reportedly denied this before his death.
