After nearly a decade of legal drama, Brad Pitt is finally opening up about the finalization of his divorce from Angelina Jolie, and his reaction might not be what you’d expect.
In an interview published by GQ on May 28, the 61-year-old actor downplayed the significance of the moment. When asked if he felt a sense of relief now that the long-running legal battle was behind him, Pitt simply replied, “No. I don’t think it was that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally.”
This marks the first time Pitt has publicly addressed the end of the divorce, which was officially signed off nearly five months ago, ending an eight-year process. Jolie, 49, filed for divorce back in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences just two years after the couple married. At the time, she and their six children left the family homes, focusing instead on healing and finding peace, according to her attorney.
“This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago,” her lawyer shared in a previous statement. “Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
Pitt and Jolie, once one of Hollywood’s most iconic couples, were together for over a decade and share six children: Maddox (23), Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (19), and twins Knox and Vivienne (16). Though they were declared legally single in 2019, they remained locked in disputes over child custody and their jointly owned French estate, Château Miraval. (The case involving the winery is still heading to trial in late 2024.)
One of the most serious chapters in their split came shortly after Jolie’s initial filing. Pitt was accused of abusive behavior during a 2016 flight, which led to an investigation by child services. He was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing and never faced charges, but the incident left a lasting mark on public perception and their ongoing legal battles.
Despite the lengthy and emotional proceedings, Pitt appears ready to move forward with his life. Sources say that his current girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, 32, played a key role in encouraging him to settle the divorce. “Ines wants Brad to find peace, forgive and move on,” an insider revealed. “From her perspective, it doesn’t make sense for him to hold on to all the animosity.”
Another source added that Pitt is feeling a “big sense of relief” and is focused on starting fresh. “Brad wants to get his life back on track and put this behind him. He can start over again.”
Jolie, meanwhile, has remained single since being linked to The Weeknd in 2021. According to a source close to her, she’s still healing from the past. “It’s hard for her to trust men after what she went through with Brad,” the insider shared. “She hasn’t sworn off men, but she’s not looking for anything serious right now.”
While the official divorce may have ended quietly, the emotional impact lingers. Still, both stars seem to be moving toward the next chapter in their lives, separately, but finally free from the years-long legal shadows of their once-iconic union.
