Captivity is one of the cruelest fates an animal can endure. Sadly, countless creatures suffer in silence due to human exploitation, and Grandma Somboon is one of them. This elderly elephant spent over 80 years in chains after being snatched from the wild as a baby. Her life was one of constant labor, forced to carry tourists and perform for crowds.
But everything changed when Thailand’s Save Elephant Foundation stepped in.
“It’s time for Grandma to be well cared for and allowed to rest,” the organization posted on Facebook. “We’re on a rescue mission to protect Somboon and transport her to her final true home.”
And they kept their promise.
Somboon was finally freed from her shackles and brought to the Elephant Nature Park sanctuary. But freedom didn’t erase the damage done. Years of abuse had left her frail and malnourished. She was missing a tooth, dangerously dehydrated, and her eyes had lost their sparkle. Recovery wouldn’t happen overnight.

Many elephants rescued from similar conditions need time to trust again. They often take weeks before they feel safe enough to lie down and rest.
But not Somboon.
Exhausted from her long journey and a lifetime of suffering, she immediately made her way to a soft sand mound prepared just for her and lay down peacefully, ignoring the chaos around her.
For the first time in more than eight decades, Somboon slept without chains around her ankles.
Her caretakers feared she might struggle to adapt, but she proved them wrong. Day by day, Somboon continues to amaze everyone with her strength and resilience. She’s finally living the life she always deserved.
Thanks to rescue groups like Save Elephant Foundation, animals like Grandma Somboon are given a second chance at happiness, and the rest they’ve earned.
