What should have been the happiest moment of her career turned into a heartbreaking ordeal.
Linsey Boyd, a waitress from Michigan, was stunned when a customer left her and her coworkers a jaw-dropping $10,000 tip on a modest $32.43 bill. The act of generosity came from an anonymous diner who had just attended a friend’s funeral and wanted to pay it forward in their memory.
Boyd worked at the Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor, where the tip was split among eight servers, giving each of them around $1,250. But just days after the tip made headlines, Boyd was fired, and despite what many believe, the restaurant insists the termination had nothing to do with the money.
Outrage quickly followed. The cafe was bombarded with negative reviews from those siding with Boyd, who addressed the incident in a now-deleted Facebook post, writing:
“I was willing to share a $10,000 tip, but was reciprocated with hate and rumors.”
According to the Mason Jar’s general manager, the customer who left the tip specifically asked that it be divided evenly among the staff. But behind the scenes, tension reportedly started to brew over who was entitled to the money, especially among those who weren’t working the day the tip came in.
Boyd didn’t go into detail about what happened, only saying that “drama ensued.” Soon after, she received a call letting her know she’d been fired. “Now, I’m without a job for the first time since I was 15,” she said.
Restaurant owners Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins responded in a public Facebook statement, saying they couldn’t share the exact reason for her dismissal due to labor laws, but insisted, “It had nothing to do with the tip.” They also clarified that Boyd received her full share, and the business handled all necessary taxes.
“We do everything in our power not to lose staff,” the owners wrote, noting that they strive to support employees long-term, especially college students working summer shifts.
But Boyd remains disheartened. “This amazing act of kindness has brought out some serious ugliness,” she wrote. “And I am taking the fall for it all.”
Online, the story has sparked major backlash, with many questioning the fairness of her termination and calling for justice. Meanwhile, the Mason Jar Cafe stands firm in its position, saying the tip had nothing to do with Boyd’s departure.
What started as an act of kindness has now become a viral controversy, leaving many wondering where the line is between generosity and workplace politics.
