It sounds like something straight out of a James Bond film, but the U.S. military actually built a secret base beneath a glacier, and now, declassified documents have revealed the truth behind this abandoned, covert operation.
With the world’s ice melting at an alarming rate, it’s probably for the best that this base is long deserted. After all, we’ve seen what happens when glaciers become unstable, they can tip over when they melt too much. Though, in this case, that scenario is likely still millennia away.
During the Cold War, the U.S. constructed an underground city in Greenland on the polar ice cap, publicly claiming it was a research facility for scientific exploration. Even the Danish government, Greenland’s ruling authority, as highlighted in former President Donald Trump’s political interest in purchasing the island, was kept in the dark about its true purpose.
In reality, this base, known as Camp Century, was the ultimate conspiracy theorist’s dream. Beneath the ice, it housed a vast network of tunnels and missile silos, all connected by rail cars, forming a secret military stronghold.
Excavation took two years, requiring engineers to dig hundreds of feet into the snow and ice. The facility was equipped with laboratories, offices, sleeping quarters, showers, a library, and even a barber shop, designed to function as a self-sustaining underground city.
But despite its ambitious design, the project was doomed from the start. What the planners failed to account for was the dynamic nature of glaciers, constantly shifting, expanding, and contracting. Unlike solid ground, ice is in perpetual motion, making it an unstable foundation for such a massive structure.
By 1960, the final touches were being made to bring the base’s nuclear reactor online. However, within minutes of operation, a leak occurred, raising concerns that radiation could eventually seep into the ocean.
For years, soldiers battled the encroaching ice, using electric chainsaws to carve back narrowing tunnels. But as the shifting glacier threatened to topple the secret missile silos, officials ultimately abandoned the plan. In 1966, they withdrew all personnel, having already shut down the nuclear reactor three years earlier.
When U.S. Army research engineer Austin Kovacs returned to the site in 1969 to conduct a survey, he found Camp Century in complete ruin, slowly being consumed by the very ice it was built beneath.
Thanks to declassified documents released in 1996, the world now knows the full extent of Camp Century and the remarkable American ingenuity that brought it to life.
When the U.S. Army abandoned the base in 1966, officials assumed the tunnels would be permanently buried under layers of ice, never to be seen again. However, they failed to account for one critical factor, global warming.
In 2016, scientists warned that Greenland’s melting ice could eventually expose the base, along with the radioactive waste, toxic materials, and human remains left behind.
At the time, study author Mike MacFerrin stated that it was only a “matter of time” before these contaminants reached the ocean.
And in a startling discovery last year, during a routine flyover to study Greenland’s ice sheet, NASA unexpectedly captured an image of the long-buried camp, offering a chilling reminder that what was once hidden may soon be revealed.
