Am I the Jerk for Not Paying My Sister-in-Law’s Hospital Bills for Childbirth?

Family is meant to be a source of support through both good times and bad. Having loved ones to lean on can make a world of difference when life gets tough. However, while standing by family is important, there’s a fine line between helping and being taken advantage of.

This is exactly what one man faced when his in-laws began demanding ongoing financial support. Despite having helped them in the past, they expected him to continue covering their expenses, leaving him stunned and unsure of how to handle the situation.

Deciding to have a child is a significant life choice, and it ultimately falls on the parents to take financial responsibility without relying on others to shoulder the costs.

The poster and his family were already on a tight budget with little to no extra money to spare. Despite their own financial struggles, they still stepped in to help his wife’s sister, who was also facing money troubles.

During her first two pregnancies, the man’s sister-in-law required financial assistance because her husband was incarcerated and unable to provide much support.

After her husband was released from jail, the sister-in-law became pregnant again, and for their third pregnancy, they assumed the poster would cover their childbirth expenses.

The man refused to provide further financial assistance to the couple, sparking a major conflict between the families.

From the beginning, the OP had felt obligated to help his sister-in-law with her expenses. With her husband incarcerated, she relied on others to cover the costs of her pregnancies. Despite his own family’s tight financial situation, the poster had supported his wife’s sister without complaint.

However, problems arose when the sister-in-law’s husband was released from prison. The man, who appeared lazy and entitled, expected the OP to cover the expenses for their third pregnancy as well. He and his family even tried to pressure the poster into paying their hospital bill, despite already having received a generous monetary gift.

Dealing with demanding family members like the poster’s in-laws can be incredibly challenging. To shed light on how to handle such situations, We spoke with Brad Shore, LMFT, who emphasized that “coercion of any type needs to be disregarded.”

Brad explained that sometimes, resolving such conflicts “may not be possible without ‘burning bridges.’ In some cases, that’s the only leverage we have with self-centered, entitled ‘takers.’ If the in-laws are reasonable, simply explain that this isn’t your financial responsibility and wish them well.”

He added, “If they are indeed reasonable, they’ll say thank you and move on. Coddling others with the illusion of a soft landing is rarely helpful and can lead to blurred boundaries. This, in turn, gives the takers more ammunition to keep coming back for more.”

When the poster informed his in-laws that he wouldn’t be covering their hospital bill, the husband became furious and started hurling insults at the OP. Despite having benefited from the poster’s financial support during his wife’s first two pregnancies, the husband felt entitled to demand that all new expenses be covered as well.

Brad Shore explained to *Bored Panda* that “when we assist family members, or anyone else who fail to take responsibility for their own financial planning, we essentially become ‘enablers.’ This enabling prevents them from learning essential life skills, such as maintaining steady employment, building a savings account, and budgeting effectively.”

He added, “Of course, this is very different from helping family members during a genuine crisis, like a natural disaster or a house fire. In those situations, stepping in to provide financial support is a wonderful thing to do.”

The sister-in-law’s husband had the opportunity to work hard and save for his growing family. Instead, he chose to remain unemployed and rely on others for financial support. While the OP recognized the unfairness of the situation, he likely felt torn by guilt and uncertainty about how to proceed.

Brad Shore advised that “if someone struggles to set healthy boundaries with others, this is an issue that should be addressed in therapy with a licensed professional. The goal would be to explore why they feel compelled to sacrifice themselves in an attempt to please others.”

It’s clear that the OP was trying to do the right thing by supporting his wife’s family. However, he shouldn’t have to sacrifice his own peace and well-being in the process.

What do you think the poster should do in this difficult situation? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Many netizens advised the poster to stop supporting his entitled in-laws and let them take responsibility for themselves.
