Though he’s no longer in the White House, former President Joe Biden is making it clear he’s not stepping away from the national conversation. Speaking at a conference in Chicago, Biden didn’t hold back, taking direct aim at both Donald Trump’s legacy and recent political developments, including the influence of figures like Elon Musk.
Biden Speaks Out in Chicago
At 82 years old, Biden took the stage at the Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD) conference. Starting with personal stories about his upbringing, he quickly pivoted to what he called one of the most critical issues facing millions of Americans: Social Security.
Recognizing Social Security National Day of Action, Biden praised the work of those supporting people with disabilities and highlighted the deeply personal nature of Social Security benefits.
“Social Security is something 73 million Americans rely on. They’ve paid into it their entire lives, and they deserve that security when it matters most.”
He credited his administration with strengthening the program, securing nearly $2 billion to improve service and reduce wait times.
A Veiled Shot at Trump, and a Clear Warning
Without naming names at first, Biden criticized efforts during Trump’s administration and by some members of Congress that he says threaten the future of Social Security.
“They want Social Security to expire every five years unless Congress renews it. What kind of arrogance is that?”
He also condemned what he called Trump’s “reckless tax break for the ultra-wealthy,” linking it to rising national debt and deepening economic inequality.
Biden’s tone sharpened as he posed a rhetorical challenge to those pushing cuts:
“How do they sleep at night?”
He warned that these policy moves have caused real harm, leading to stress, uncertainty, and hardship for working Americans.
A Line in the Sand
Biden quoted Governor Ali, who criticized Republican efforts to gut the system:
“They want to collapse it in order to plunder it.”
And Biden’s response was crystal clear:
“I absolutely refuse to support any of this.”
He closed his speech with a reminder of what public service should be about:
“Government must work for all people. Leaders must honor the commitments made to every citizen.”
The Bigger Question
While Biden’s remarks were met with applause, they also reignited a broader debate: Is Social Security a sacred promise, or a bloated program ripe for reform?
