In a heartbreaking yet inspiring story, Anderson County Deputy Lucas Shoffner put his wife’s life before his own, resulting in a dramatic turn of events.

Lucas and his wife, Nicole, were on the side of the road at night, working on a dirt bike when tragedy struck. Off-duty Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Raymond Surber, driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, accidentally hit the couple, leaving them both with severe injuries.

A Selfless Act of Heroism
Nicole suffered a minor head injury and was taken to Fort Sanders, while Lucas was rushed to the UT Medical Center Transplant ICU with severe head trauma. Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma, fearing the worst.
Loudon County Deputy Matt Fagiana, a close friend, later revealed that Lucas had heroically pushed Nicole to safety just moments before impact, taking the full brunt of the collision himself.

“Let’s start praying for our buddy,” Fagiana urged. “If anyone deserves a second chance at life, it’s him. He’s kind, loyal, funny, and as strong as an ox. You got this, Lucas, we’re behind you and Nicole every step of the way.”
A Fight for Survival
Lucas battled life-threatening brain injuries, including a brain bleed and multiple fractures. As he underwent high-risk surgery to reduce swelling, Nicole held onto hope, praying for a miracle.

Three weeks later, that miracle arrived. After spending 23 days in a coma, Lucas defied the odds, his condition improved, and doctors became optimistic about his recovery.
“They removed the right part of his skull,” Nicole shared in a video update. “He’s been stable ever since. If we can get through the next 48 hours, things are looking positive.”
A Community Rallies Behind a Hero

After 17 more days in the ICU, Lucas was strong enough to be transferred to a rehabilitation center. Nicole accompanied him to Atlanta, standing by his side as he began the long road to recovery.
Their story of resilience spread quickly, inspiring people across the country. A close friend launched a GoFundMe campaign, which raised nearly $100,000 in just a few months to support their journey.
Months after the accident, Nicole expressed profound gratitude, not only for her survival but for the husband who saved her life. While Lucas continues to face a challenging recovery, he is making steady progress, step by step.
His future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear, his love and sacrifice have left an unforgettable impact. After dedicating their lives to serving others, Lucas and Nicole now receive the unwavering support of the very community they once protected.
