If you often feel the sudden urge to go to the bathroom right after eating, you’re not alone. It’s not because your food is rushing through you, but rather due to a normal bodily response called the gastrocolic reflex. When food enters your stomach and stretches, it sends a signal to your brain, which in turn tells your colon to contract and make room for more food. This can lead to the immediate urge to go. The stool you pass is typically from earlier meals, not the one you just ate. People with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) may experience this urge more intensely, often accompanied by cramping or diarrhea. Though uncomfortable, these symptoms can be managed with proper care.
