Doctor Identifies Fingernail Sign That Could Indicate Your Life Expectancy

A longevity expert has shared that he closely monitors his fingernails as an indicator of how quickly he’s aging.

While most of us might think about aging simply as getting older with each passing year, Dr. David Sinclair, a longevity expert, takes a more detailed approach, focusing on his nails to track the pace of his aging and, by extension, how much time he might have left.

When it comes to health, fingernails are likely not the first thing that comes to mind. People typically prioritize their fitness, heart health, lungs, and diet, and go about their day without giving their nails much thought.
Dr. Sinclair, a genetics expert at Harvard Medical School, explained that the condition of your nails is a crucial indicator of how quickly your body is producing new healthy cells.

He also noted that the faster this process occurs, the better your protection against age-related decline.

Biological aging refers to how old your body’s cells and tissues appear, based on their function, which may differ from your actual age.

Dr. Sinclair explained on his podcast Lifespan: “The rate at which your nails grow is a strong indicator of how you’re aging, or not aging.”

“I always pay attention to whether my nails are slowing down in growth,” Dr. Sinclair said. “Every time I cut my nails, I ask myself, ‘How long ago did I last do this?’”

During the podcast, he referenced a 1979 study where scientists tracked the fingernail growth of hundreds of individuals over several years. The study found that, on average, the growth rate of fingernails slowed by about 0.5 percent annually starting at age 30.

The research suggested that faster nail growth could be a sign that you’re aging at a slower rate than average. Additionally, nails can sometimes signal more serious health conditions.

While nails can vary from person to person, experts recommend paying attention to any changes in shape or color.

For instance, a black spot under the nail could indicate cancer, while white spots or lines on the nails may suggest deficiencies in essential nutrients like calcium, iron, or zinc.
