For one solemn day, the world turned its eyes to Rome, where hundreds of thousands, including global leaders, gathered to bid farewell to Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope and a transformative figure in the Catholic Church.
Among the attendees were U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Their presence, however, was overshadowed by a series of actions and comments by the president that many deemed inappropriate and disrespectful.
Prior to arriving in Rome, Trump stirred controversy with his remarks about the late pontiff. When asked to reflect on Pope Francis, the president simply said, “He was a fantastic kind of a guy.” The casual phrasing drew swift backlash online, with critics arguing that such a significant religious and moral figure deserved a more thoughtful tribute.
The backlash intensified when Trump mentioned the funeral would be a chance to meet with other world leaders and “talk trade.” The remark sparked outrage, with many accusing him of politicizing a sacred event. “Please tell me Donald Trump isn’t going to try to work trade deals at Pope Francis’s funeral,” one person posted on X (formerly Twitter), echoing widespread dismay. Others called his comments “disrespectful” and “inappropriate.”
But it wasn’t just Trump’s words that drew criticism.
At the funeral, President Trump’s attire also came under scrutiny. While virtually all other dignitaries dressed in traditional black as a mark of mourning, Trump stood out in a blue suit, an unusual and, to many, tone-deaf choice for such a somber occasion. “He stuck out like a sore thumb,” one commenter noted. Others interpreted the wardrobe decision as an intentional bid to draw attention.
“Any reason why Donald Trump is in a blue suit and not wearing traditional black for a funeral?” one user asked. Another wrote, “Trump wearing a blue suit to the Pope’s funeral so that he stands out. No class.”
Despite briefly pausing to pay respects as he and Melania passed Pope Francis’ coffin, the president’s presence was marked more by controversy than solemnity. Critics accused him of turning a global day of mourning into another moment centered on himself.
The event was meant to honor the life and legacy of a revered spiritual leader. Instead, for many, President Trump’s behavior became an unwelcome distraction.
