Trump’s Greenland Dream Gains Momentum as Congress Considers Legislation
Former President Donald Trump’s long-standing ambition to purchase Greenland has taken a step forward as new legislation has been introduced in Congress.
Since reclaiming the White House less than a month ago (January 20), the Trump administration has pushed an aggressive expansionist agenda. The 78-year-old has already renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” proposed reclaiming the Panama Canal, encouraged Canada to become the 51st U.S. state, and even suggested taking control of Gaza, which would displace Palestinian residents.
Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland is well-documented, even sparking a tense phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, an exchange that reportedly threw officials into crisis mode.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been under Danish rule since the 18th century. Initially a colony, it was reclassified as a district of Denmark in 1953.
New Developments in Congress
Republican Congressman Buddy Carter of Georgia has now introduced legislation that would authorize Trump to negotiate with Denmark and Greenland regarding a potential U.S. acquisition of the island.
An aircraft reportedly carrying Donald Trump Jr. landed in Nuuk, Greenland, on January 7, just weeks after Trump hinted at annexing the territory.
Carter released a statement declaring, “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland.”

Carter continued, “President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of Greenland as a national security priority. We will proudly welcome its people to the freest nation ever when our Negotiator-in-Chief finalizes this monumental deal.”
The bill has been referred to committee for further consideration. Its purpose, as stated in the proposal, is “to authorize the President to enter into negotiations to acquire Greenland and rename it ‘Red, White, and Blueland.’”
Trump’s Confidence in the Deal
Trump has repeatedly claimed that Greenland’s 57,000 residents would prefer to be part of the United States.
Speaking to reporters last month, he confidently stated, “I think we’re going to have it. I believe the people want to be with us.”
Questioning Denmark’s claim to Greenland, he added, “It would be very unfriendly if they refused, because this is about protecting the free world.”
He further justified the potential acquisition, saying, “Greenland will be part of America because it’s about global freedom. The United States is the only nation that can guarantee that freedom.”
