The Measles Virus Incubates Silently Before Symptoms Appear
Measles is an extremely contagious disease caused by the rubeola virus. Once it enters the body, typically through airborne droplets or contact with infected surfaces, it incubates for up to 12 days before symptoms emerge.
The virus spreads easily through sneezing, coughing, talking, or touching contaminated objects. Because measles remains active in the air for up to two hours, simply breathing in an area where an infected person has been can result in transmission. Early Symptoms Resemble a Cold or Flu

The Measles Rash Spreads Across the Entire Body
The most well-known symptom of measles is its widespread red rash. It begins near the hairline and then spreads downward across the face, neck, torso, arms, and legs, eventually covering the entire body.
Although not painful, the rash can be itchy. Its appearance is due to the virus infecting capillaries in the skin. In response, immune cells release chemicals like nitric oxide and histamines to fight the infection. While effective in combating the virus, these chemicals also cause swelling and cell damage, leading to the rash.
At this stage, fever may spike as high as 104°F (40°C), making the disease particularly dangerous.

Measles Can Cause Serious, Even Deadly Complications
Measles primarily attacks the respiratory system before spreading to lymph nodes and the bloodstream. This allows the virus to invade various organs and tissues, leading to severe complications such as:
Respiratory infections: Measles can cause bronchitis and pneumonia, both of which can be life-threatening.
Ear infections: The virus can lead to painful ear infections, sometimes resulting in hearing loss.
Diarrhea and dehydration: Gastrointestinal symptoms can weaken the body further.
Encephalitis: In some cases, measles causes brain inflammation, which can lead to seizures, permanent neurological damage, or death.
Even after recovery, measles weakens the immune system for years by erasing the body’s memory of previous infections. This makes individuals more susceptible to other diseases long after the initial illness.

Vaccination Has Drastically Reduced Measles Cases, But the Disease Persists
Before vaccines, measles had a mortality rate of around 5%, with much higher rates in impoverished areas, sometimes reaching 20-30%. The introduction of the measles vaccine in the 1960s led to a dramatic decline in cases. By 2000, the United States declared measles eliminated.
However, global measles cases remain high due to uneven vaccine distribution. In 2023, infections increased by 20% worldwide, with 10.3 million reported cases and over 107,000 deaths.
