One night, a young boy called 911 but didn’t say a word. An officer who lived near the house where the call came from was sent to check on things. It was about 9:30 p.m., and she had just put her youngest child to bed when she got the alert.
When she arrived, an 8-year-old boy opened the door. He didn’t seem to be in any danger. The house was simple but clean and tidy. The boy was there with his little sister.
His name was Mateo. He explained that he called 911 because he and his sister were hungry. They were alone with no adults around.
After talking to them, the officer learned their mom worked two jobs and was clearly struggling to make ends meet. Mateo said he looked after his sister, Sophia, while their mom was at work. Usually, they had a bit of food in the fridge, but this time there was only a jug of milk and some ketchup packets.
The officer called for back-up and soon paramedics arrived. One named Rosa brought sandwiches for the kids.
Before contacting social services, the officer found the children’s mom working at Joe’s Diner. She was told her kids were safe but starving.
The mother was upset but it was clear she cared deeply and was forced to work long hours to support her family.
In the days that followed, both the officer and Rosa couldn’t stop thinking about Mateo and Sophia.
One day, Rosa visited the officer with an idea. She wanted to start a project where officers, paramedics, and community members could help families in need. They called it Midnight Meals, and it quickly became a huge success.
Every Friday night, volunteers delivered food and essentials to vulnerable families. The response was overwhelming. Teachers donated books and school supplies, grocery stores gave canned goods, and teenagers volunteered their time.
One night, Rosa and the officer decided to deliver supplies themselves. When they arrived at Mateo and Sophia’s house, everything looked different. There was more furniture, more food, and even decorations.
Mateo recognized the two women right away. His mother thanked them for all they had done.
Rosa gave Mateo a new backpack filled with school supplies, and he was thrilled.
