Kate McCann believes a seemingly innocent note in a restaurant’s reservation book may have played a chilling role in her daughter Madeleine’s disappearance.
Three-year-old Madeleine vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007. The case, which shocked the world, remains unsolved nearly two decades later and is often called the most heavily reported missing person case in modern history.
At the time, Madeleine was asleep alongside her younger twin siblings while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, dined nearby with friends at a tapas restaurant. When Kate returned to check on the children, Madeleine was gone.
Despite extensive international searches and media attention, Madeleine’s whereabouts remain unknown. Over the years, there have been numerous developments, including apologies from Portuguese police and a named suspect in Germany, though no charges related to Madeleine’s disappearance have been brought forward.
Now, Kate has revealed a disturbing detail she discovered a year after Portuguese police files were made public. In her 2011 memoir Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her, she recounts finding a note written in the resort’s restaurant reservation book that left her horrified.
Kate explained that during the vacation, she and their group of nine had managed to secure a standing dinner reservation at the resort’s tapas restaurant. This arrangement was noted in a staff message book left at the pool reception desk, a location visible and accessible to staff and possibly even other guests.
But it was the specific wording in that note that truly unsettled her.
“To my horror,” Kate wrote, “the receptionist had added the reason for our request: we wanted to eat close to our apartments as we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them intermittently.”
While the note may have been made with innocent intent, it effectively revealed that the group was dining away from their unattended children, a detail Kate now fears could have been seen by the wrong person.
The McCanns had opted to check on their children themselves rather than bring them to dinner or use the resort’s child care service. Reflecting on that decision, Kate wrote, “We now bitterly regret it and will do so until the end of our days.”
Though investigators continue to explore leads, and the McCanns remain hopeful, the mystery of what happened to Madeleine remains unsolved.
