David Quammen, a science writer known for his prescient warnings, famously predicted the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic seven years before it occurred. His 2012 book, Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic, highlighted the risk of a coronavirus emerging from a wet market in China. His warning proved eerily accurate.
Now, Quammen is sounding the alarm on another potential crisis: bird flu. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, he expressed deep concerns about the H5N1 avian influenza, which he believes has the potential to become the next global pandemic. The virus, which has already led to widespread outbreaks in poultry and affected mammals, has prompted fears of another epidemic.

While there is currently no evidence of person-to-person transmission, Quammen and public health experts are closely monitoring the situation. Over 1,000 dairy herds, 168 million chickens, and at least 70 human cases, including the first death in the U.S., have been impacted by the virus.
Quammen noted, “I have high concerns about bird flu. If you’re going to make a prediction about what would be the next big one now, scientists would probably say bird flu has the best chance.” However, he also emphasized the unpredictability of viruses, explaining that mutations can happen at random, and that the virus could suddenly evolve into a more dangerous strain capable of spreading between humans.
Despite the risks, Quammen believes that predicting the exact outcome remains uncertain. “It might take four or five mutations of just the right combination to create a pandemic,” he said, comparing the odds to a game of roulette. “The more times the wheel is spun, the more likely it becomes.”
The H5N1 strain has already been confirmed in various wild animals and was first identified in the U.S. in 2022. While human cases so far have been linked to direct contact with infected animals, scientists warn that the risk of human-to-human transmission could rise if the virus continues to mutate. The CDC has downplayed the immediate risk, but experts are urging increased vigilance.
Quammen also raised alarms about industrial-scale animal farming, which he believes creates conditions ripe for the spread of viruses. “These mass production facilities are petri dishes for the evolution of viruses,” he said, stressing the dangers of factory farming and the impact it has on both human health and global ecosystems.
He further explained that the combination of overpopulation, environmental destruction, and climate change has set the stage for future pandemics. “It’s not just the sheer numbers of people causing the problem, it’s how we consume and interact with the environment,” Quammen said. “We’re disrupting wild ecosystems, creating opportunities for viruses to spill over into humans.”
To help prevent future outbreaks, Quammen advocates for stronger climate change measures, less reliance on animal protein, and a more thoughtful approach to population growth. “Think twice about how much animal protein you buy and where you buy it,” he advised, emphasizing the need for personal responsibility in reducing global health risks.
