A man has been left permanently scarred after a medical error led to the accidental removal of his jaw during a routine dental procedure.
The 35-year-old man from Rome, Italy, had visited Policlinico Umberto I hospital on May 20 to have a wisdom tooth and a cyst removed. However, instead of a simple dental procedure, he underwent major jaw surgery, resulting in irreversible damage.
The tragedy occurred when dentists performed a biopsy on his cyst but mistakenly swapped the slides with those from another patient who had been diagnosed with a malignant osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer).
In June, the man, who was in good health, was stunned to receive the results indicating a high-grade cancerous growth in his jaw.
Medics informed the man that immediate jaw removal surgery and chemotherapy were necessary to treat the aggressive tumor. He was reportedly “devastated” by the diagnosis and told there was “no alternative” but to undergo jaw removal surgery and receive nine rounds of chemotherapy.
The surgery on July 22 left him with permanent damage, including paralysis on the right side of his face, which he described as making him feel “deformed.”
However, a follow-up test in September revealed a shocking twist when doctors informed him that the life-threatening tumor was gone, and he no longer required the invasive cancer treatments.
Suspicious of the results, the man sought a second opinion and had the DNA from his supposed biological material tested at another lab at the Catholic University of Rome the following month.
On October 25, the results came back: “The DNA is not mine,” he reported to L’Unione Sarda.
The test confirmed that the man did not have a deadly cancerous growth, making the jaw surgery completely unnecessary.
He is also reportedly concerned about the other patient who actually has the life-threatening tumor. “I no longer have a jaw and I don’t have the tumor, but someone else is very sick,” he said.
In an interview with the Italian news outlet Corriere della Sera, he expressed his emotional turmoil: “Even now, I can’t fully describe my state of mind. I am alive, I am healthy, and I don’t have any fatal disease, but I have suffered immensely.”
The man is now pursuing compensation for his injuries and has filed a legal complaint against the dental clinic. The case is being handled by the Prosecutor’s Office in Rome.
An investigation led by prosecutor Eleonara Fini is underway to determine how the mistake occurred and who is responsible.
