A 35-year-old man from Rome, Italy, has been left permanently scarred after a devastating medical error resulted in the unnecessary removal of his jaw.
The man had originally gone to Policlinico Umberto I hospital on May 20 for a routine wisdom tooth extraction and the removal of a small cyst. However, due to a biopsy mix-up, doctors mistakenly diagnosed him with an aggressive form of bone cancer, leading to life-altering surgery.
A Devastating Misdiagnosis
The error occurred when doctors confused his biopsy slides with those of another patient who actually had a malignant osteosarcoma in their jawbone. In June, the man received the shocking news that he had a high-grade cancerous tumor, and he was told that immediate surgery and chemotherapy were his only options.
Fearing for his life, he underwent major surgery on July 22 to remove his jaw, followed by the placement of a reconstructed implant. The procedure left him with permanent damage, including facial paralysis on the right side of his face.
The Truth Comes Out
In September, a follow-up test revealed that the supposed tumor had mysteriously disappeared. Suspicious of the results, the man sought a second opinion and had his biopsy material tested at the Catholic University of Rome in October. The results confirmed his worst fears, he had never had cancer in the first place.
“I no longer have a jaw, and I don’t have the tumor,” he said, deeply concerned about the real patient who may still be unaware of their life-threatening condition.
Legal Action and Investigation
Now seeking justice, the man has filed a legal complaint against the hospital, accusing them of medical malpractice. The case is currently under investigation by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office, led by Eleonara Fini, to determine how such a catastrophic mistake was made.
