Michael B. Tretow, the legendary sound engineer behind ABBA’s iconic music, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Fans have been sharing heartfelt tributes on social media following the news. One fan wrote, “So sad to wake up to this news! The music world has lost a legend… but his work will live on forever!” Another added, “It’s never easy losing someone you’ve known and worked with for decades. I can only imagine how the ABBA members are feeling. At least he left a lasting mark on the world.” A third commented, “What sad news and what a great loss. Condolences to ABBA. He brought so much joy through his work.”
Michael B. Tretow was often called the ‘fifth member’ of ABBA for his crucial role in creating the band’s revolutionary sound. He worked closely with the group on all their albums from 1973’s Ring Ring through to 1981’s The Visitors. The only album he didn’t work on was 2021’s Voyage. Besides his engineering work, Tretow also co-owned ABBA’s record label, Polar Music.
The members of ABBA have shared touching tributes to honor his memory.
Benny Andersson told Aftonbladet, “I hope and believe you felt it over all these years since we worked and laughed together in the studio. Our music lives on because of you. You made it timeless. You were a fantastic source of inspiration and joy, the finest sound engineer the world has ever seen.”
Björn Ulvaeus called Tretow’s contribution to ABBA “immeasurable” and described him as “a warm, generous person and a good friend.” He thanked him for “all the laughs.”
Anni-Frid Lyngstad said, “You were the safety and creativity in our studio bubble, always warm and full of joy. No one could match you. You will always be part of the ABBA sound and never forgotten.”
Agnetha Fältskog added, “I’m so glad I got to spend some time with you a few weeks ago. You were very sick, but your laughter and humor stayed with you. So many memories are preserved, and your encouragement during recording meant the world. We are saddened by the loss of such a talented and unique person. Rest well, Micke, you will always be in our hearts.”
Tretow’s wife and son confirmed his passing to Aftonbladet, alongside ABBA’s manager Görel Hanser.
No official cause of death has been announced, though ABBA’s tributes mention he had been ill.
