Netflix viewers in the U.K. could be hit with a £1,000 (about $1,300) fine if they watched the recent Tudum Live event without a valid TV licence.
Traditionally, Netflix users haven’t needed a TV licence since the service offered only on-demand shows and movies. However, with Netflix now streaming live events, the rules have changed. In the U.K., watching or recording any live broadcast, no matter the platform, requires a current TV licence.
This became especially relevant during the Tudum Live broadcast over the weekend. Anyone who tuned in to this real-time event must have a valid TV licence, or they risk being fined up to £1,000.
The issue was first flagged in 2023 as Netflix began rolling out live content. The BBC has confirmed that live streams on Netflix fall under the same legal requirements as traditional TV channels.
Daniel McAfee, Head of Legal Operations at Lawhive, explained: “Under U.K. law, any live television broadcast requires a valid TV Licence, regardless of the streaming platform.” He advised viewers to keep updated on licensing as streaming services expand live offerings.
Thankfully, the bulk of Netflix’s on-demand content isn’t affected by this rule. Licence requirements only apply to live broadcasts and services like BBC iPlayer.
While TV licence enforcement officers can carry out checks, residents aren’t obliged to let them inside. Still, ignoring fines can lead to court enforcement and even jail time, though jail is rare for licence evasion alone.
A color TV licence currently costs about £169.50 ($216) per year, while a black and white licence is cheaper at £57 ($73). Some groups, such as those over 75 receiving Pension Credit or people with disabilities, may qualify for free or discounted licences.
As streaming platforms add more live events, U.K. viewers should stay aware of licensing rules to avoid unexpected penalties, even when watching Netflix.
