People think they’ve uncovered the hidden meaning behind a mysterious woman’s face that appears 21 minutes into Shrek.

Shrek fans are buzzing online over the so-called ‘mystery of the Duloc woman’, a real-life face that appears in the background of the first Shrek movie.

As fans eagerly await Shrek 5, set for release in 2026, some have turned their attention to this bizarre detail in the 2001 original. Among the fairy-tale creatures of Far Far Away, viewers have spotted what looks like a photograph of a real human woman hidden in the scene.

The image appears around 21 minutes into the film when Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) arrive at Lord Farquaad’s castle in Duloc. If you pause at 00:21:18, you’ll see what seems to be a real woman’s face peering from a window in a ticket booth, completely out of place in the animated world.

Unlike live-action productions, where background slip-ups like a stray camera operator are common (Squid Game had a famous example), Shrek is fully animated, making this anomaly even more puzzling.

One Reddit user in the r/Shrek thread claims to have one of the oldest physical copies of the film and has been digging into the mystery, offering their own theory on the strange image.

They elaborated:

I checked this release tonight and confirmed that the woman has been in the film since its original 2001 version. This means it’s not something Netflix added later, and no edits were made to this scene between 2002 and today.

“I’ve attached photo proof, along with another image from my latest Blu-ray release and a digitally enhanced screenshot from VUDU to better show the original photo’s scale and color.

“It’s tricky to capture in high quality since she’s behind a reflective window, and the low bitrate of most versions, except for Blu-ray, makes it hard to get a clear view of our mystery lady.”

The user has since proposed a possible solution to the ‘mystery,’ explaining that they’ve been ‘cross-referencing photos of animators, crew members, and their family members’ to identify the woman.

And they’re not the only one with this theory.

Another Redditor commented: “My guess would be an animator or one of their loved ones, since it’s hidden and so obviously not meant to be there by it just not fitting in.”

Someone else added: “That’s what I thought, but she looks like she is crying.”
