On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Prevost made history as he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to deliver his first address as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the 267th pope and the first American to lead the Catholic Church.
“Peace be with all of you,” Pope Leo XIV began, calling for a peace “rooted in humility and perseverance.” He paid tribute to Pope Francis, reminding the faithful, “God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail!” The new pontiff also emphasized the importance of dialogue, describing Christ as “a light the world continues to seek.”
Acknowledging his gratitude toward the cardinals and his former diocese in Peru, Pope Leo quoted St. Augustine, saying, “With you I am a Christian and for you I am a bishop.” He envisioned a Church grounded in compassion and service, reinforcing the message of unity and peace.
On the Feast of the Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii, Pope Leo XIV urged all to pray for peace. The speech resonated deeply with many, with some noting its spiritual depth and others suggesting it carried political undertones. Regardless of interpretation, the address marked a hopeful beginning for a new chapter in the Church under Pope Leo XIV.
