Music producer Roy Thomas Baker, best known for his work with Queen, has tragically passed away at the age of 78. Tributes from fans and colleagues have been flooding in on social media, with one fan writing: “Sad to hear this. The term ‘legend’ is often overused, but not in this case.”
Another fan added: “A tremendous loss.” A third fan expressed: “RIP, sir. Your influence on music shaped my childhood, and your records continue to be a huge part of my life. Rest in peace, knowing your legacy lives on.”
One fan also highlighted Baker’s monumental contribution to Queen’s most iconic song: “His work on ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ should never be overlooked or underestimated. It’s my favorite song of all time.”
Baker, a celebrated producer, worked closely with Queen on some of their most renowned albums, including 1975’s A Night at the Opera, which featured the Grammy-nominated track “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Despite initial resistance from their record label, EMI, who hesitated to release the six-minute single, “Bohemian Rhapsody” went on to become a global hit.
In a 2005 interview with The New York Times, Baker shared his thoughts on the success of the song: “I thought it was going to be a hit. We didn’t know it was going to be quite that big. I didn’t realize it was still going to be talked about 30 years later.”
Baker’s influence extended far beyond Queen. He also produced for many legendary artists, including David Bowie, Guns N’ Roses, Ozzy Osbourne, The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Journey, Yes, and the Smashing Pumpkins. He worked on multiple albums for The Cars and even helped produce Mötley Crüe’s debut album, Too Fast for Love.
Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, paid tribute to Baker on social media, sharing photos of the late producer. He wrote: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Roy Thomas Baker. Roy played a huge part in the production of so much Queen music in the early days. I regret not staying in touch with him more in recent years.”
May continued, “Thank you, Roy, for all the great work you did for us and all the fun we had. Rest in peace. Bri.”
Roy Thomas Baker’s cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
