Scientists may have discovered a breakthrough treatment for Ebola, a virus notorious for its 90% mortality rate. New research published in Science Advances highlights the effectiveness of an oral drug, obeldesivir (ODV), in combating the deadly disease when administered within 24 hours of exposure.
Ebola has long been one of the most lethal viruses known to humanity. Past outbreaks, such as the 2013-2016 epidemic in West Africa that claimed 11,325 lives out of 28,600 cases, and the 2018-2020 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda with 2,299 deaths, underscore the virus’s devastating impact. Until now, treatment options have been limited and primarily delivered through intravenous methods, posing challenges in accessibility and administration.

The study tested ODV on ten macaques, five rhesus and five crab-eating monkeys, infected with Ebola. Those given the drug within 24 hours and treated daily for 10 days showed remarkable survival rates: 100% of rhesus macaques survived, while 80% of the crab-eating macaques also overcame the infection. Scientists observed improved immune response and anti-inflammatory effects in the treated subjects, suggesting the drug enhances the body’s natural defenses.
What makes ODV particularly promising is its oral administration, which offers significant advantages over existing intravenous treatments. The ability to easily transport, store, and distribute an effective antiviral could revolutionize outbreak response efforts, making life-saving treatment more accessible in remote or crisis-stricken areas.

Beyond Ebola, researchers believe ODV could serve as a broad-spectrum antiviral against other deadly filoviruses, opening the door to new treatments for a range of infectious diseases. As further studies progress, this development could mark a turning point in the fight against some of the world’s most dangerous viruses.
