Signs That Someone May Not Be Trustworthy

Nothing stings more than letting someone into your life, only to discover they’ve betrayed your trust. While it’s unhealthy to approach every person with suspicion, it’s crucial to recognize the subtle signs that someone may not be trustworthy. Being able to spot these red flags can protect you from emotional harm without making you cynical or guarded.

You don’t have to doubt everyone you meet, but having a clear sense of who tends to be untrustworthy can save you from making big mistakes, whether it’s choosing a car, deciding on a restaurant, or entering a relationship. According to Dr. Gretchen Kubacky, Psy.D., “If you don’t know who is trustworthy, and who isn’t, you’re going to make mistakes about the big stuff as well as the small stuff, anything from which car to buy to who you should partner with in life.” Lacking this awareness can lead to uncertainty, doubt, and indecision.

While trusting your instincts is key, someone’s behavior and actions are often telling indicators of their trustworthiness. If you’re unsure about someone’s authenticity, watch for these 10 subtle red flags that can reveal if they’re not as reliable as they seem.

1. Trust Your Gut

If you have an uneasy feeling about someone, even if you can’t explain it, trust that instinct. “Unless you’re someone who tends to be overly suspicious, your gut feeling is likely based on something real,” says Sarah Schewitz, Psy.D. “Your intuition and unconscious mind can pick up on subtle cues that your conscious mind might overlook or dismiss as irrelevant.”

2. You Spot Contradictions

“If you notice obvious contradictions in someone’s behavior, conflicting stories, or they act secretive without giving a clear reason, it could be a sign that they aren’t trustworthy,” says clinical psychologist Marni Amsellem, Ph.D. “Be extra cautious if they dodge questions about these inconsistencies or offer elaborate, questionable explanations.”

3. Your Friends Notice Something

At times, we might miss things that are clear to others because we tend to see what we want to see. “If close friends or family members express doubts about someone’s trustworthiness, it’s important to take a step back and reflect honestly,” says Amsellem. “Ask yourself if there’s something you’re overlooking or choosing not to see.”

4. They Lie to Others

Hearing someone lie to others is always a red flag, and while it’s tempting to think you’re the exception, that’s often not the case. “If they’re willing to lie to other people, what’s to stop them from lying to you?” says Schewitz.

5. They Fail to Follow Through

If someone is consistently unreliable, that’s a major red flag. Trust isn’t just about honesty; it’s also about being dependable and following through on commitments. “If someone regularly cancels plans at the last minute, forgets tasks they promised to complete, or neglects responsibilities, it’s a clear sign that they can’t be trusted to keep their word,” says Schewitz. “You shouldn’t expect them to follow through when it matters most.”

6. They Refuse to Compromise

It can be both frustrating and concerning when someone is unwilling to meet you halfway and insists on always doing things their way. As John Gottman, author of The Science of Trust, explains, trust is gradually built when people are willing to compromise and find common ground. If someone is consistently resistant to this, it could signal an issue with their trustworthiness.

7. They Constantly Brag

When someone constantly brags, it can be a sign they’re exaggerating the truth, masking insecurities, or trying to prove something to others. “Although needing to prove oneself doesn’t always make someone untrustworthy, it’s still a red flag,” says Schewitz. “It makes you wonder why they struggle with being vulnerable or authentic. What are they trying to hide?”

8. They Can’t Be Counted On

“When it comes to trust, reliability is crucial,” says Kubacky. “If they consistently fail to show up when they promise, or neglect to follow through on their commitments, it’s a clear sign that they can’t be trusted.”

9. They Keep Their Past Hidden

“In today’s digital age, it’s unusual for someone not to have a digital footprint,” says Kubacky. “If a person is evasive about their background, such as where they’re from, their past relationships, education, or career, that’s a red flag. While trustworthy people don’t need to share every detail online, you should be able to easily verify key aspects of their history.”

10. They Frequently Gossip

If someone frequently gossips about others, it’s a sign they may not be good at keeping things confidential. As Schewitz puts it, “If they gossip about other friends, family, or coworkers, what’s to stop them from doing the same to you?” People’s ethical behavior tends to remain consistent across different situations.

It can be tough to determine if someone truly deserves your trust, but if something feels off, it’s often a sign that they may not be trustworthy.
