A 19-year-old has lost her life after taking part in the dangerous social media trend known as ‘dusting.’
The parents of Renna O’Rourke, a 19-year-old from Arizona, U.S., are sounding the alarm about the deadly TikTok trend called ‘dusting,’ also referred to as chroming or huffing, following their daughter’s tragic death.
Aaron O’Rourke, Renna’s father, shared with 12 News: “She always said, ‘Dad, I’m going to be famous, just watch.’ Heartbreakingly, this isn’t how she deserved to be remembered.”
Renna O’Rourke, 19, passed away after engaging in the ‘dusting’ challenge.

Described as vibrant, compassionate, and loyal, Renna suffered cardiac arrest after inhaling aerosol keyboard cleaner and was rushed to the hospital. She remained unconscious in the ICU for a week before being declared brain-dead. Her cause of death was sudden sniffing death syndrome, a fatal condition linked to inhalant abuse.
The ‘dusting’ trend involves inhaling household products, like aerosol cleaners, to achieve a high for social media clout. The Cleveland Clinic warns that inhalants can cause mind-altering effects, with severe short- and long-term health risks, including death.
According to The Independent, Renna and her boyfriend ordered aerosol keyboard cleaner via DoorDash to her parents’ home without her mother’s knowledge. She went into cardiac arrest shortly after inhaling the substance.

Renna’s parents are raising awareness about the risks of ‘dusting.’
Determined to honor their daughter, Renna’s parents are spreading awareness about the dangers of ‘dusting.’ Her mother, Dana O’Rourke, said, “It’s odorless, requires no ID, and is cheap and accessible to kids. It won’t show up on standard drug tests.” She urged parents, “Don’t just trust your kids, search their rooms. It feels harsh, but it could save their lives.”
A GoFundMe campaign was launched to cover the O’Rourke family’s hospital, burial, and therapy expenses while promoting awareness of ‘dusting.’ Initially aiming for $5,000, it has raised over $12,000 at the time of writing.
Tributes on the page include: “Heartbroken for your loss,” and “Renna was such a kind soul, I’m so sorry.”
