In 1990, British Airways pilot Tim Lancaster faced a terrifying ordeal when the cockpit windshield shattered at 17,000 feet during a flight from Birmingham to Málaga, Spain. The sudden break caused Lancaster to be partially sucked out of the aircraft, his upper body exposed to freezing, high-altitude air while his legs remained trapped inside.
Flight attendant Nigel Ogden sprang into action, grabbing Lancaster’s legs and holding on for an incredible 20 minutes despite suffering frostbite and injuries. Meanwhile, co-pilot Alastair Atchison kept the plane steady and prepared for an emergency landing.
Another crew member, Simon Rogers, joined Ogden to help share the strain. Passengers watched in horror as the crew fought to prevent Lancaster’s full ejection and safely guide the plane to Southampton Airport.
Though Lancaster endured frostbite and fractures, he survived against all odds.
