An X Factor fan favorite has sadly passed away, and tributes are pouring in from around the world.
Tony Adkins, better known as “Big Tony,” has died at the age of 64. Fans and friends are mourning the loss of the beloved bodyguard who became an unexpected icon thanks to his unforgettable appearances on the hit talent show.
Social media quickly filled with heartfelt messages. One fan wrote, “Absolutely heartbreaking, RIP. Sleep well.” Another said, “What a legend. I used to love seeing him on screen. RIP.” A third added, “So sorry for your loss. Sending you all love, hugs, and prayers at this difficult time.”
Known for his towering presence and no-nonsense attitude, Tony left a lasting impression during his eight years on The X Factor. He often appeared on screen removing unruly contestants from the stage, earning him a place in some of the show’s most iconic moments.
He worked closely with Simon Cowell until 2009 and had nothing but kind words for the music mogul after their time together ended. Speaking to the Mirror, he said, “Simon was so laid-back and a very nice guy. He was generous too. Whenever the show finished, or at Christmas, you’d get an envelope as a thank you. The last one I got had £700 in it.”
Tony also shared behind-the-scenes stories, including Cowell’s famous wardrobe consistency. “Simon had about 20 identical T-shirts. I remember one had a hole in it, so he just pulled another one from the pile,” he recalled. “He’s a very private person. You never see him drunk or out of control. But he is vain. He does his hair all the time.”
Outside of The X Factor, Tony appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 as a giant. Fans said it was a perfect role for the gentle giant.
News of his passing was confirmed by a family member, who wrote, “It is with great sadness that my family would like to announce that my cousin Big Tony, Simon Cowell’s ex-bodyguard, passed away on Easter Sunday while on a rugby tour. He was a lovable rogue and will be missed very much. RIP Big T.”
Tony had been part of the Hammersmith and Fulham RFC rugby club for 40 years. In a tribute, the club said, “It is with immense sadness that Hammersmith and Fulham RFC pays tribute to a true gent and great Hammer, Tony Adkins, who passed away on Easter Sunday while on tour with the club in Poland.”
They added, “More than a rugby player, Tony found a niche later in life under the bright lights. He served as a longtime bodyguard for Simon Cowell during his X Factor years and appeared in the Harry Potter franchise as a giant, which all agreed was fitting.”
Simon Cowell has not yet publicly commented on Tony’s passing.
Tony may have started as a bodyguard, but he became something more. He was a gentle giant who made a lasting impression on fans and colleagues alike.
