Tooth Regrowth May Soon Replace Fillings and Crowns, Here’s How

Dental work can be brutally expensive, with single tooth repairs sometimes costing thousands of dollars. A Third Set of Teeth Might Be in Our Genes


For decades, scientists have been looking for ways to go beyond traditional dental repairs. Katsu Takahashi, a researcher in Osaka, believes humans may actually have the genetic blueprint to grow a third set of teeth. According to his team, we still carry the “tooth buds” that once allowed our ancestors to grow extra teeth.

“The number of teeth varied through the mutation of just one gene,” Takahashi explained. “If we make that our target, we may be able to change how many teeth people can grow.”

The Key Is Turning Off a Molecule Called USAG-1


So, what’s stopping us from growing new teeth right now? A molecule called USAG-1, which essentially puts the brakes on tooth growth. Takahashi’s team found a way to switch this molecule off by using RNA to deliver antibodies that block its function. This research, so far tested in animals, recently moved into human trials, and if all goes well, the first tooth-regrowing drug could hit the market by 2030.

Stem Cells Could Offer a “Living Filling”


Another promising route involves stem cells, which are essentially blank cells that can turn into many different types of tissue. In 2023, researchers at the University of Washington School of Dentistry created mini tooth-like structures (called organoids) from stem cells that can produce enamel-forming proteins. The dream? One day your dentist might fill a cavity with a living, growing material that becomes part of your natural tooth.

Mineral-Based Enamel Repair Is Also on the Table


If cells aren’t your thing, maybe minerals are. Back in 2019, researchers in China developed a calcium phosphate gel that mimics natural enamel. When applied to damaged teeth, the gel formed a new three-micrometer-thick enamel layer. It’s not a full replacement for a tooth yet, but it’s a solid step in the right direction.

What This Means for the Future of Dentistry


Regrowing teeth might sound like sci-fi, but science is catching up. Between blocking USAG-1, working with stem cells, and applying mineral-based gels, the dental industry could be on the brink of a major evolution. Instead of relying on artificial fillings and crowns, we may soon heal cavities and even regrow lost teeth naturally.

These treatments aren’t ready for your next checkup just yet, but they could be in the coming years. If successful, they’ll offer longer-lasting, more natural fixes for tooth loss and decay, and possibly save us all a lot of money and pain at the dentist.
