Saturday, May 10, when a family of four was found dead in their home in Johnson Lake, Plum Creek Canyon, in Dawson County, Nebraska. Authorities responded to the scene around 9:45 a.m. and discovered the bodies of 42-year-old Jeremy Koch, 41-year-old Bailey Koch, and their two sons, Hudson, 18, and Asher, 16.
The shocking discovery was made by Bailey’s parents, Lane and Peggy Kugler, just hours before their grandson, Hudson, was scheduled to graduate at the Cozad Graduation Ceremony. Despite the heart-wrenching news, the graduation ceremony went ahead, though Superintendent Dan Endorf acknowledged the profound impact of the tragedy on the community. “The bittersweet emotions felt by the senior class on their graduation day, and by this entire gymnasium, cannot be concealed in this moment,” he said.
Nebraska State Police later confirmed that all four family members had died from fatal knife wounds, with a knife found at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that Jeremy Koch may have killed his wife and two sons before taking his own life. An autopsy has been ordered, and a homicide investigation is ongoing.
Tragically, just days before their deaths, Bailey had set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to support her husband’s ongoing battle with mental health issues. She had shared that Jeremy had struggled with depression since 2009. In her final post, Bailey expressed hope that Jeremy would be released from a mental health facility in time for their son’s graduation.
Bailey, a special education teacher at Holdrege Public Schools, had been open about her husband’s mental health struggles through a Facebook page called “Anchoring Hope for Mental Health: Jeremy & Bailey Koch.” In an earlier post, Bailey shared a painful memory of finding her husband standing by their bed with a knife, following a recent suicide attempt. Despite the challenges, Jeremy had agreed to undergo treatment and electroconvulsive therapy before being admitted to a mental health facility.
Bailey’s parents, Lane and Peggy, expressed their deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that Jeremy had fought mental illness for years and that his depression had escalated into psychosis. They placed part of the blame on the U.S. mental health system, calling it a “disaster” and a “catastrophe” that had failed their son-in-law and many others like him. “This country is in crisis because there is far too little help available to tackle the mental illness crisis,” they said.
The National Institute of Mental Health reports that one in five Americans is affected by mental illness, and recent years have seen an increase in suicide rates across the country. This tragic event highlights the urgent need for better mental health care and support systems.
