The Donnelly family from Northern Ireland holds a record that’s nothing short of extraordinary. With a combined age of more than 1,073 years across 13 siblings, they’ve been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living family of siblings.
So what’s their secret?
According to the Donnellys, who grew up in Collegelands near the border of County Armagh and County Tyrone, it all comes down to a mix of clean living, wholesome food, and one major lifestyle choice: not a single one of them drinks alcohol.
“There isn’t a single drinker in this family,” said Leo Donnelly, the youngest sibling at 72. “That certainly helps.”
The family first realized they might be record-breakers during a birthday celebration for their sister Maureen. “At Maureen’s 90th, my twin brother Austin said, ‘We must be the oldest family in the world,’” Leo recalled. That offhand comment turned into a mission. With Austin leading the charge, the siblings began collecting documents to verify their ages. Sadly, Austin passed away on Christmas Day in 2015, but the family carried on his dream and eventually secured their spot in the record books in his memory.
The Donnellys credit much of their longevity to their rural upbringing and diet. Their father, Peter Donnelly, was a well-known apple farmer, and homegrown fruits and vegetables made up the bulk of their meals. Apples, in particular, have been a family staple for generations.
“They talk about Mediterranean diets and Japanese sushi, but we’ve had apples running through our veins since before we were born,” said Leo.
Another key to their routine? Porridge. Lots of it.
“We’ve always had porridge before bed at 10 p.m. and again for breakfast at 7 a.m.,” Leo explained. “Cooked oats, milk, and a little apple jam on top.”
Though diet and genetics clearly play a role, experts agree that the Donnellys’ total avoidance of alcohol is significant. Studies show that steering clear of alcohol can lead to improved heart health, better sleep, stronger liver function, and even enhanced nutrient absorption.
Despite losing three siblings over the years, the remaining Donnellys continue to maintain close bonds and a love for the simple lifestyle that shaped them. Their remarkable journey was even featured in the BBC documentary The World’s Oldest Family, which dives into the choices and habits behind their astonishing longevity.
As for their biggest piece of advice? Keep it clean, keep it simple, and skip the booze.
