Friends fans are still debating what they believe to be one of the show’s biggest “mistakes” ever.
Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel, continues to spark confusion due to inconsistencies in the spelling of her last name throughout the series.
In The One with the Invitation (Season 4, Episode 21), which aired in 1998, Ross’ wedding invitation to Emily spells her last name as Greene. The same spelling appears again five years later in The One Where Rachel Goes Back to Work (Season 9, Episode 11).
However, in The One With The Cake (Season 10, Episode 4), when an erotic cake is mistakenly delivered for Emma’s birthday, the address lists Rachel’s last name as Green instead.
As reported by Metro, a Reddit user pointed out the inconsistency, saying: “They go backwards and forwards throughout the show on whether it’s Green or Greene. It could very well be Grean for all we know.”
Another fan speculated: “Both spellings have been used, interestingly enough. I wonder if they just didn’t keep track of how they spelled it, or if they messed up somewhere and stuck with it, or if they actively decided at some point to change it?”
Despite the on-screen spelling inconsistencies, IMDb officially lists the character’s name as Rachel Green, and Warner Bros. reportedly used the same spelling in its press materials.
This discussion comes after Jennifer Aniston became emotional when asked about Friends during Variety’s Actors on Actors series.
When Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson brought up the show, Aniston responded with a shaky voice: “Oh God, don’t make me cry.”
Brunson, 34, noticed Aniston getting emotional and offered, “You’re already crying. Do you want a minute? We don’t have to talk about [it].”
Aniston, appearing to reference her friendship with the late Matthew Perry, replied: “I’m sorry, I just started thinking about—”
Perry tragically passed away at 54 on October 28, 2023, due to “acute effects of ketamine.” He was found unconscious in a Jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home. Authorities later revealed a “broad underground criminal network” had been distributing large amounts of ketamine, including to Perry.
Following his passing, Aniston shared a heartfelt Instagram tribute:
“He was such a part of our DNA. We were always the six of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be. He made all of us laugh. And laugh hard…
“Matty, I love you so much and I know you are now completely at peace and out of any pain. I talk to you every day… sometimes I can almost hear you saying ‘could you BE any crazier?’”
