The Great Pyramid of Giza, the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, has stunned tourists for centuries, but a recent aerial sighting has left viewers around the world speechless for a completely different reason.
While soaring over the iconic 4,500-year-old structure, tourist Alex Lang captured footage of a surprising guest: a lone dog casually roaming the very top of the 455-foot pyramid. At first, Lang noticed some movement on the peak, but was shocked to realize it was a sandy-colored canine calmly exploring the ancient landmark.
Despite the dizzying height, the dog seemed completely unbothered, even barking at birds as it trotted along the limestone blocks. The jaw-dropping moment, caught on video, quickly went viral, with social media users both awestruck and amused.
Many were quick to make playful references to Egyptian mythology, with one commenter declaring, “That’s not a dog, that’s Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead, guarding the tomb!” Another joked, “If he pees there, all of Egypt belongs to him.”
Still, others expressed concern for the dog’s safety, wondering how it got up there and whether it had water or a way back down. Fortunately, professional adventure athlete Marshall Mosher, who shared the footage, later confirmed that the dog had safely descended the pyramid after its bold adventure.
In a follow-up post, Mosher noted that more than 100 stray dogs are known to roam the area around the pyramids, though few (if any) have pulled off a stunt like this one.
As incredible as the sight was, it’s worth remembering that climbing the pyramids is strictly illegal. In fact, those caught doing so can face up to three years in prison. One German teen was even banned from Egypt for life after scaling the Great Pyramid in 2016 to snap photos.
Historically, animals held a sacred place in Ancient Egyptian culture, often seen as divine gifts from the gods. Dogs, along with cats, monkeys, and even hippos, were treated with reverence and sometimes mummified like humans when they passed.
Whether this fearless dog was just exploring or living out its divine destiny, one thing is clear, it’s now earned a legendary status of its own.
