As dating and relationships evolve in the digital age, so do the ways people define trust, loyalty, and betrayal. One young woman’s breakup has reignited a heated debate, is subscribing to adult content online considered cheating?
For Maddi Miller, a 20-year-old from Perth, Australia, the answer was a definite yes. When she discovered that her boyfriend had secretly subscribed to a popular creator on a content platform, she ended the relationship on the spot.
What makes her story even more interesting? Maddi is a content creator herself, reportedly earning around $30,000 a month. Despite being in the industry, she’s clear about one thing, secrecy and betrayal are deal-breakers.
“Trust is so important, which is why I had to end it with an ex after I caught him looking at naked photos of other women while in bed with me,” Maddi told News.com.au.
She emphasized that the issue wasn’t the content itself, it was the fact that her boyfriend had been sneaky about it.
“If my ex had asked to watch some content together or expressed curiosity, we could’ve talked about it. But he went behind my back and subscribed to creators I personally knew. That’s a huge breach of trust,” she said. “It’s betrayal.”
Maddi discovered the subscriptions after noticing strange activity on his phone. Even though he denied it at first, she found out he had been following multiple creators. The fact that some of them were people she actually knew made it even worse.
Her story has sparked a national conversation, with many women coming forward to say they’d feel just as betrayed in the same situation.
According to a large survey by News.com.au, the divide is clear, 61.3% of women believe subscribing to adult content online is cheating, while only 46.1% of men agree.
Another 42% said it “depends on the type of interaction,” showing that people are still figuring out where to draw the line in the digital age.
Lucy Banks, a content creator and founder of Million Billion Media, believes the answer isn’t so black and white.
“Society and relationships have evolved. Today, keeping a relationship healthy takes emotional intelligence, transparency, and communication,” she said. “Is it cheating? It depends on the relationship.”
As more people navigate these gray areas, one thing is clear, when it comes to love and loyalty in the online world, the rules are still being written.
