Wizz Air flight attendant Ioana Iachim shared the behind-the-scenes truth: when cabin crew greet passengers during boarding, they’re not just being friendly, they’re quietly scanning everyone for safety reasons.
“I say ‘hello’ so I can assess whether you’re too drunk, too sick, or maybe someone who could help in an emergency,” she revealed.
That’s right, those few seconds of eye contact help flight attendants make quick mental notes about each passenger’s condition. Are you alert? Stable? Able to assist if something goes wrong?
Spotting the Helpers, and the Hazards
The process helps identify potential issues before takeoff. For example, a passenger who appears ill or intoxicated might pose a safety risk. On the flip side, flight attendants are also watching for ABPs, “able-bodied persons”, who could help in an emergency evacuation.
