The chilling final words of a man and his girlfriend, captured in a six-minute audio recording, reveal the horrifying moment they were killed by a grizzly bear in Alaska.
Timothy Treadwell, famously known as the “Grizzly Man,” had spent over a decade living among the wild bears of Katmai National Park, earning recognition as a passionate environmentalist and documentary filmmaker. But the same bears he called friends would ultimately take his life.
Treadwell, who often gave the bears names and considered them companions, found comfort in the solitude of nature. Disenchanted with modern society, he dedicated 13 summers to studying and filming grizzlies, often camping in remote and risky areas of the Alaskan wilderness.
He split his time between two main spots: Big Green, an open area ideal for bear watching, and the Grizzly Maze, a dense, dangerous zone that offered closer encounters with the animals.
Despite repeated warnings from park officials about the dangers of getting too close, Treadwell continued to approach bears, even playfully interacting with cubs, a habit that would prove fatal.
In October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, camped late into the bear season, a time when food becomes scarce and the animals are more aggressive. They pitched their tent deep in the Grizzly Maze.
On October 6, their air taxi pilot, Willy Fulton, arrived at the site for a routine pickup and was met with a gruesome scene: a large, hostile bear lingering near human remains.
Fulton found the couple’s tent torn apart, their belongings scattered, and human body parts hidden beneath a mound of grass. Investigators would later recover Treadwell’s severed head, his arm still wearing a wristwatch, and other remains indicating they were partially consumed.
What made the tragedy even more haunting was the discovery of a recording capturing the final six minutes of the attack. Treadwell had accidentally left the lens cap on his video camera, but the microphone picked up the entire assault.
The audio reveals a desperate and terrifying scene. Treadwell can be heard screaming, “Get out here! I’m getting killed out here!” while Huguenard tries to fight off the bear with a frying pan, urging him to “fight back.” Her screams continue until the recording ends abruptly.
The disturbing audio has never been made public, but filmmaker Werner Herzog, who listened to it during the production of Grizzly Man, described it as unbearable. In the documentary, he urges those in possession of the tape to destroy it, warning that no one should ever hear what he did.
The bear responsible was later tracked down and killed. Authorities confirmed it had consumed much of the victims’ remains.
Treadwell’s story remains both a cautionary tale and a tragic reminder of nature’s raw power. His devotion to the bears he loved ultimately cost him and his girlfriend their lives.
