Loren Schauers, a laborer from Montana, saw his life change in an instant in September 2019. While operating a forklift, Loren accidentally drove off the edge of a bridge, plummeting over 50 feet. The fall left his body crushed beneath the weight of the heavy equipment.
Though he miraculously survived, Loren underwent a rare and extreme surgery known as a hemicorporectomy, a procedure that involves amputating the entire lower half of the body, including the pelvis and lower limbs. He also lost one of his arms, which was irreparably damaged in the accident.
“The doctors gave me a choice,” Loren said in an interview with RTL 4. “Live with this new reality, or die with the one I had.”
Loren chose life.
Since then, he and his wife Sabia have documented their journey on YouTube, amassing over 639,000 subscribers. They’ve shared their challenges, hopes for the future, including dreams of traveling and possibly starting a family, and candidly addressed questions from fans.
In one Q&A, Loren was asked if his friendships changed after the accident. He admitted some friends became distant, while others stepped up with unexpected support. “But it’s whatever,” he said. “I’ve got Sabia, that’s all I need.”
Sabia agreed, saying their relationship has only grown stronger through everything they’ve faced together.
As their online presence grew, so did the deeply personal questions. While the couple has politely declined to speak about intimacy, Sabia addressed the frequent curiosity with grace:
“That’s a very personal question we’ll never answer. Just because our circumstances are different doesn’t mean people have a right to ask.”
One topic Loren has spoken openly about is how he uses the bathroom, something many followers have asked out of curiosity.
“I have a colostomy, which means my colon is pulled outside of my body so I can poop,” Loren explained. “And I have nephrostomy tubes in my kidneys that drain urine into bags. That’s how I poop, pee, and yes, fart.”
Despite unimaginable obstacles, Loren’s resilience, sense of humor, and openness have made him an inspiration to many. His story is a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to adapt, endure, and thrive.
