Petition for Denmark to Buy California Gains 240,000 Signatures After Trump’s Bid for Greenland

Denmark appears to be turning the tables on Donald Trump.

Recently, President Trump had a tense phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, reportedly discussing the possibility of the U.S. purchasing Greenland, a proposal that was met with strong opposition from the Danes.

Despite the backlash, Trump has insisted that acquiring the island is crucial, calling it an “absolute necessity.”

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he wrote on Truth Social.

“Greenland is an incredible place. The people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, cherish it, from a very vicious outside World.

MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

Despite Trump’s bold statement, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has firmly stated that the Danish territory “is not for sale and will not be in the future.”

In response to Trump’s controversial proposal, a satirical petition has emerged, calling for Denmark to purchase California, one of the largest U.S. states, home to approximately 38 million people.

As of Thursday, February 13, the petition titled “Let’s Buy California from Trump, Denmark’s Next Big Adventure” has amassed over 244,000 signatures.

The petition’s bio humorously states:

“Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.’ Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!”

“Yes, you heard that right. California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen.”

It continues:

“It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation. So California will become New Denmark. Los Angeles? More like Løs Ångeles.”

The petition is believed to have been created by civil tech activist Xåvier Dutoit, who explained his reasoning to Newsweek.

Dutoit recalled being in a bar when he overheard “a rather annoying discussion” from a MAGA-adjacent American who “couldn’t quite understand how insane the Greenland proposal is.”

In response, he launched the now-viral petition to highlight what he calls the “neocolonialism obscenity” of Trump’s suggestion.

The petition humorously proposes a crowdfunding goal of $1 trillion to acquire California, which, according to Dutoit, averages out to just 200,000 kroner per Dane.
